| Take the well sign-posted Heritage
Walk which commences at the John Riddoch Interpretive Centre car park:- Petticoat Lane - the oldest part of Penola and a Heritage Precinct, contains a number of National Trust Properties. Fine examples of slab hewn timber and stone cottages erected in the 1850 - 1860's. Red gum kerbing and rose plantings enhance the lane's character as an example of days gone by. Gammon Cottage - 1850's. An interesting 4 roomed, small stone dwelling with separate wooden detached kitchen. Purchased by the Trust in 1978. Wilsons' Cottage
- built in the 1850's of soft stone. Of special interest are the low stone
doorways. The cottage was presented to the Trust in 1984 and restored. It is
currently leased to Nesta Wilson whose business sells fine linens, embroidery and
lace. Sharam's Cottages
- Penola's first house, the slab cottage was built in 1850 and a timber cottage in
1872. Purchased by the Trust in 1981 and restored. Currently leased to Sandra Gray
"Kiddies and Friends", selling Teddies, Dolls, Toys and Craft items. Old Rectory - Former Church of England Rectory built in 1850's and occupied as a rectory in 1889-1895. A weatherboard house with a shingle roof, it was purchased by the Trust in 1987 and restored. Available for lease: Phone 08 8736 5062. Also maintained by the National Trust in Petticoat Lane are:- The Shed - framework of Australian Hardwood, roofed in recycled iron
and housing an early 1900's wagon. |
